Crimson Desert Forgotten General Boss: Illusions, 4-Direction Attacks and Clear Mechanic

Updated: 2026-08-114 sections

The Forgotten General is a hidden world boss in Crimson Desert that does not appear on any map and is not mentioned in any quest log. It is one of the most secretive encounters in the game, and many players complete the entire main story without ever discovering it. Finding and defeating this boss rewards some of the rarest items in the game.

The Forgotten General is located in the ancient ruins east of the Pailune region. To reach the ruins, travel to the easternmost edge of Pailune and look for a crumbling stone archway partially obscured by vegetation. The archway leads to a descending path into an underground ruin complex.

However, the boss does not spawn simply by entering the ruins. You must first complete a specific side quest chain to trigger the encounter:

  • Step 1: Find the NPC Scholar Veyra in Pailune town. She stands near the library entrance and offers the quest Echoes of the Fallen.
  • Step 2: Complete Echoes of the Fallen, which involves collecting three ancient tablets from ruins across Pailune, the Southern Vineyards, and the Central Plains.
  • Step 3: Return the tablets to Scholar Veyra to receive the quest The Forgotten Name, which directs you to the eastern ruins.
  • Step 4: Enter the ruins and place the three tablets on the altar in the central chamber. This triggers the Forgotten General encounter.

The quest chain can be started at any point after reaching Chapter 5, but the boss is balanced for level 48+ characters. Attempting it earlier is possible but extremely difficult due to the boss's high damage output and complex mechanics.

Illusion Phase Mechanics

The Forgotten General fight is unique among Crimson Desert Bosses because it revolves around an illusion mechanic. The boss creates clones of itself that attack simultaneously, forcing you to identify and focus on the real target while managing attacks from multiple directions.

The fight has three distinct phases, each adding more illusions:

Phase 1 (100% to 70% HP): The Forgotten General fights alone with a single weapon. This phase is relatively straightforward and serves as an introduction to his attack patterns. He uses sweeping melee attacks and an AoE ground slam. Learn his timing here, as the illusions in later phases use the same patterns.

Phase 2 (70% to 35% HP): The boss summons 4 clones (illusions) that surround you in a cross formation. All four illusions plus the real boss attack simultaneously from different directions. This is the most mechanically demanding phase. The illusions deal reduced damage compared to the real boss but can still overwhelm you if not managed.

The key mechanic in Phase 2 is the 4-direction attack pattern. Each illusion attacks from one cardinal direction (north, south, east, west) in a synchronized pattern. The attacks alternate between horizontal sweeps and thrust attacks. You must dodge in the correct direction to avoid each attack:

  • Horizontal sweep from an illusion: dodge toward that illusion to pass through the swing
  • Thrust attack from an illusion: dodge perpendicular to the thrust direction

Phase 3 (35% to 0% HP): The illusions become more aggressive and the real boss gains a new AoE attack that covers the entire arena. You must identify and damage the real boss quickly before the enrage timer triggers.

Strategy for Clearing Illusions Efficiently

The most critical skill for this fight is learning to identify the real Forgotten General among the illusions. While the clones look nearly identical, there are subtle telltale signs that distinguish the real boss.

Visual differences to watch for:

  • Weapon glow - The real boss's weapon has a slightly stronger, warmer glow compared to the illusions' dimmer, cooler glow
  • Movement aggression - The real boss moves more directly toward you and initiates attacks more frequently, while illusions tend to circle and wait for their turn in the attack pattern
  • Shadow - The real boss casts a full dynamic shadow, while illusions have fainter, more static shadows
  • Health bar - Only the real boss has a visible health bar; attacks on illusions show no damage numbers

Once you have identified the real boss, the optimal strategy is to focus exclusively on it while using dodges and movement to avoid illusion attacks. Do not waste time attacking illusions, as they cannot be killed and will despawn when the phase transitions.

For Phase 2 specifically, position yourself at the center of the cross formation and use the following rotation:

  • Dodge the first illusion's attack toward the real boss
  • Land 2-3 hits on the real boss
  • Dodge the second illusion's attack away from the real boss
  • Reposition and repeat

Use AoE abilities sparingly, as they will hit illusions and waste resources. Single-target abilities and weapon skills are far more efficient. If you have unlocked Force Palm, save it for Phase 3 to interrupt the real boss's AoE attack, which has a 2-second telegraph.

Final Phase and Enrage Timer

Phase 3 is the most dangerous part of the fight due to the introduction of an enrage timer. After 5 minutes from the start of Phase 3, the Forgotten General enters an enraged state that significantly increases his damage output and attack speed. If you have not defeated him by this point, the fight becomes nearly unwinnable.

In Phase 3, the following changes occur:

  • All illusions gain a damage boost, making their attacks nearly as dangerous as the real boss
  • The real boss gains a new AoE attack called Ruinous Nova that covers the entire arena. It has a 3-second telegraph during which the boss glows intensely. You must use the altar in the center of the room as cover to avoid the blast.
  • Illusion attack speed increases, reducing your dodge reaction window
  • The real boss begins teleporting between positions after each attack, making it harder to track

Enrage timer management: The 5-minute timer starts when Phase 3 begins (at 35% HP). To ensure you have enough time, aim to enter Phase 3 with at least 3 minutes of consumables remaining. Use your strongest burst damage abilities and weapon skills immediately at the start of Phase 3 to burn through the remaining health as quickly as possible.

Rewards for defeating the Forgotten General: The boss drops Abyss Artifacts, rare crafting materials unique to this encounter, and a unique weapon with illusion-based enchantments. The weapon, called the Mirage Edge, has a chance to create a brief illusion of the wielder upon critical hits, confusing enemies in both PvE and PvP. It is considered one of the best endgame weapons for agile builds.
